How a teak bench weathers

Left untreated, a teak bench turns silver-grey within months; oiled once or twice a year it keeps its golden colour. Either way it stays strong.

Where to put a garden bench

  • Under a tree: A bench in dappled shade becomes the place for the first coffee of the day. Teak copes with leaf drop and damp without rotting.
  • Along a path or border: A 150 cm bench fits neatly against a hedge or wall and gives a reason to stop and look at the planting.
  • By the back door: Somewhere to pull boots on, or to sit with a cup of tea. A chunky bench takes knocks from bikes and pots.
  • At the end of the lawn: A curved banana bench at the far end of the garden draws the eye and turns a lawn into a destination.

Looking after a teak bench

  • No treatment needed: Grade A teak is full of natural oils. Left untreated, your bench weathers to silver and stays strong for decades.
  • Oil it for gold: For the honey colour, wash the bench in spring and wipe on teak oil or protector once or twice a year.
  • Wash once a year: Warm soapy water and a soft brush along the grain removes moss and pollen. Avoid pressure washers.
  • Out all winter: Teak benches can stay outside in frost and snow. Keep the feet off standing water and use a breathable cover if you like.
  • Cushions inside: Bring seat cushions in when it rains and over winter to keep them fresh.
  • Small cracks are normal: Hairline checks on the end grain open and close with the weather – they are natural and harmless.

Teak bench FAQs

What size teak garden bench do I need?

Allow about 50 cm of seat per adult. Our 150 cm benches (Classic and Balmoral) seat three, the Lutyens 165 cm seats three in comfort, and the 180 cm York and Salisbury benches seat four. Use “Take a seat” on this page to see each bench with people sitting on it, to scale.

What is a peanut bench?

“Peanut bench” is another name for a curved banana bench – the seat and back curve round so people sit facing each other slightly, ideal around a round table or a fire pit. Our 160 cm banana bench and the San Francisco bench are both this shape.

Which teak bench is the most heavy duty?

The Balmoral chunky bench and the Salisbury bench, with its 7 cm thick legs, are our heaviest and sturdiest benches – ideal for exposed gardens and busy family use.

Can a teak bench stay outside all year?

Yes. Grade A teak is naturally rich in oils that keep out water, rot and insects, so a teak bench can stay outside in rain, frost and snow all year round.

Will my teak bench go grey?

Untreated teak weathers to a soft silver-grey within months – see the weathering slider on this page. It is only a surface colour and does not affect strength. Oil it once or twice a year to keep the golden colour.

How do I clean a teak garden bench?

Once a year, scrub along the grain with warm soapy water and a soft brush, rinse and let it dry. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, which raise the grain.

Are your teak benches on sale?

Many of our teak benches are currently reduced. Prices on this page come live from our shop, with sale and original prices shown on each bench.

What is a Lutyens bench?

A Lutyens bench follows the classic English design by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, with a curved, scalloped back and scrolled arms. Our Sissinghurst Lutyens bench is 165 cm long and also comes as a set with a coffee table and two chairs.

Is the teak FSC certified?

Yes. Our benches are made from Grade A teak heartwood from FSC-certified, sustainably managed plantations.

How is a teak bench delivered?

Delivery is free to most of mainland UK and usually takes 3–5 working days. Most benches need only simple assembly with the fittings supplied.
