How to Plant, Maintain & Care for palm trees in the UK?

Follow this simple UK-specific guide and your palm tree will thrive for decades, even in our unpredictable British weather.
1. Best time to plant palm trees in the UK
Plant between April and September when the soil is warm. Avoid winter planting unless you can offer frost protection.
2. Choosing the right location
Sunlight and Shelter
Full sun to light shade (the more sun, the faster they grow). Choose a spot sheltered from strong prevailing winds – especially important for Trachycarpus fortunei and Phoenix canariensis.
Soil Conditions
Well-drained soil is essential – palms hate waterlogged roots. Explore our plants and trees collection for varieties suited to different soil types.
3. How to plant your palm tree
Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Mix in grit or sharp sand if your soil is heavy clay. Plant at the same level it was in the pot – never bury the trunk. Water deeply after planting and mulch with bark or gravel.
4. Winter protection for palm trees in the UK
Young Palms (<3 years)
Tie leaves upwards and wrap the crown with horticultural fleece when frost is forecast.
Mature Specimens
Mature Trachycarpus fortunei & wagnerianus usually need no protection below –12 °C. Phoenix canariensis & Washingtonia robusta: fleece the crown down to –8 °C in colder regions. Learn more in our palm tree guide.
5. Ongoing palm tree care
Water regularly in the first two summers; established palms are very drought-tolerant. Feed once in spring with a slow-release palm fertiliser or general balanced feed – see our fertiliser guide for more tips. Remove dead lower leaves in late spring – never cut green leaves. No pruning needed – just tidy!

How to Protect Your Palm Trees During a UK Winter

Keep your palm trees safe through even the coldest British winters with these proven, easy steps. Most hardy varieties survive –12 °C and below once established, but a little protection in the early years (or during extreme cold) guarantees perfect results. For more details on species resilience, explore our hardy palm tree collection.
When to protect
Start when night temperatures drop below –5 °C for more than 2–3 days, or when severe frost is forecast. You can find more timing tips on our expert blog.
Winter protection methods – from mild to hardcore
Tie the leaves upwards
Gather the fronds into a loose bunch and secure with soft rope or bungee cords. This stops snow/ice collecting in the crown and protects the growing point.
Wrap the crown with horticultural fleece
Use 2–3 layers of fleece or a purpose-made palm crown protector. Essential for Phoenix canariensis and Washingtonia robusta down to –8/–10 °C, and for young Trachycarpus in exposed areas.
Add extra warmth and trunk protection
A 40–60 W incandescent bulb or LED Christmas lights inside the tied leaves can raise temperature 3–5 °C on the very coldest nights. For very young or tender palms, wrap the trunk with bubble wrap or hessian + fleece from ground level to the crown.
Mulch the roots
Apply a 10–15 cm layer of bark or gravel around the base – keeps roots insulated and improves drainage. Check our planting and care guide for more soil tips.
Hardiness Quick Reference
-
Trachycarpus fortunei & wagnerianus → usually need no protection once over 3 years old (survive –15 °C unprotected).
-
Phoenix canariensis → fleece crown below –6 °C.
-
Washingtonia robusta → fleece crown in all but mild south/coastal areas.
-
Jubaea chilensis & Butia → treat like Phoenix. Browse these in our plants and trees section.
-
Spring Recovery
Remove all protection in late March / early April when night temperatures stay above 0 °C. With these simple steps, your palm trees will emerge every spring looking perfect – no brown leaves, no crown rot, just lush tropical growth. FAQS

Will palm trees survive in the UK?
Yes – fully hardy palm trees such as Trachycarpus fortunei, Trachycarpus wagnerianus and Phoenix canariensis survive and thrive across the entire UK. Established specimens regularly withstand –12 °C to –15 °C with no damage.
Do palm trees need winter protection in the UK?
Mature Trachycarpus fortunei & wagnerianus usually need no protection at all. Young palms (under 3 years) and varieties like Phoenix canariensis or Washingtonia robusta benefit from tying the leaves up and a light fleece wrap on the crown when temperatures drop below –8 °C for several days. Learn more in our winter protection guide.
How cold can palm trees tolerate in the UK?
Trachycarpus fortunei & wagnerianus can tolerate –15 °C and lower once established. Phoenix canariensis handles –8 °C to –10 °C (with basic crown protection), while Washingtonia robusta tolerates –8 °C in milder areas, with fleece recommended elsewhere. Check our palm tree collection for specific hardiness details.
How fast do palm trees grow in the UK?
Hardy palms grow 30–60 cm per year in height once settled, depending on sun, soil and summer warmth. Trachycarpus fortunei is the fastest and most reliable in British conditions.
Can I grow a palm tree in a pot on a patio or balcony?
Absolutely – palms are perfect for container growing. Use a large, sturdy pot with excellent drainage, quality loam-based compost, and feed every spring. Raise the pot slightly in winter to avoid waterlogging. See our plants and trees for species that suit smaller spaces.
What is the best time to plant a palm tree in the UK?
April to September is ideal. This gives roots time to establish before the first winter. Container-grown palms can be planted year-round if you can water them well. Browse our shop to start planting today.
Do palm trees need a lot of care in the UK?
No – once established they are extremely low-maintenance. Water regularly in the first two summers, feed once a year in spring, and tidy dead leaves. That’s it. For more tips, visit our palm tree fertilizer guide.
Will my palm tree die in a British winter?
Thousands of palm trees across the UK (even in Scotland!) survive every winter. Choose proven hardy varieties from us, plant correctly, and give minimal protection to young ones – your palm will be fine.
